Clean 3 foot corner for final 2009 contest
Clean head high waves greeted the 48 strong competitive field for the final Wellington Boardriders Club surfing contest of 2009 on Saturday.
The morning started out a little onshore and chunky, but by mid-morning the waves had cleaned up and the contest arena was buzzing in anticipation of a great day’s competitive surfing ahead.
This contest was a double point score which will be added to the current points tally to determine division winners for the 2009/10 season. Our annual prize-giving (at Lyall Bay Bowling Club) on Sunday 29th November will see trophies being awarded to each division winner.
A highlight of the day was a wave caught in the final by open mens runner up Brandon Kingi of Titahi Bay. On a solid overhead set wave he came square of the bottom and performed a radical vertical snap, putting it on the line and coming so very close to taking out the final.
In the end however, the two high scoring waves from Charlie Denniston of Riversdale were what was needed to see him claim victory in the Open Mens division and take top spot on the Wellington Boardriders Club points tally for 2009 (tally updated this week). A series of smooth manouevres and super-fast surfing in general by Denniston was another highlight of the event.
Results for all divisions were as follows (1st place getters):
Open Mens – Charlie Denniston
Open Womens – Donna Muir
Junior Mens – Charlie Denniston
Over 30 Mens – Kristin Savage
Over 40 Mens – Scott Brenton
Longboards – Scott Brenton
*Most Radical/Progressive Manoeuvre – Brandon Kingi
Congratulations to all those surfers who gained results and well done to all competitors for getting involved. Here are some photos from Racoon Projects.
