Comp 3, 2011 Autumn Surf Series – Ripping in the Rain

June 21, 2011
Jeremy Buckley in the Open Men's Final
The day before the third and final comp in the Autumn Surf Series was a classic day you only get @ Lyall about 10 times a year. It was well over head with super light winds and plenty of barrels. Naturally, we made the call on the Friday night hoping that the corner would still be dishing out silky smooth cylindrical spheres on Saturday.

When we rocked up on Saturday morning it was far from epic but there were still some occasional one and a half footers coming in. A good bunch of competitors had braved the cold, wet morning and fronted up too so it was ‘on’.

As soon as the call was made to start heats the swell picked up a bit and pretty consistent shoulder height sets started to come in. In fact, most competitors were able to rack up around five waves in their heats.

There was a nice, relaxed feeling about the day and Ilan (contest director) had it all under control. The heats were anything but relaxed though and they were all fiercely competed. The Men’s Open Final was particularly sick and featured some top-level surfing and some big scores. Although all of the surfers in the final did well, Jeremy Buckley was a deserving winner. In his top scoring wave he got a nice clean barrel, bashed a nice waft, did a full round house cutty and a finished the wave with another hit….not bad : c )

The results:
Open Mens:
1 Jeremy Buckley
2 Ilan Fisher
3 Pete Maloney
4 David CrofootJuniors:
1 Jack McDonald
2 Josh Martelli
3 Struan Griffiths
4 Liam Tume

Over 30s:
1 Jeremy Buckley
2 James Whitaker
3 Russell Miller
4 Mark TumeWomens:
1 Hayley Rogers
2 Maria Wandle
3 Zoe Adams

The winners were grinners too considering they received stacks of goodies from Gordons Wetsuits, Oakley Sunnies, Stoke Beers, Manky Chops, DVS Shoes, Realsurf and Wild Style. We’d like to thank the sponsors for coming to the party and the surfers for contributing to a fun (albeit bloody freezing) day. Results – club contest 7 November

November 7, 2010

Sunny waist high waves greeted competitors on Sunday for the first Wellington Boardriders Club Pointscore Contest of Spring. Postponed from Saturday due to ugly conditions the day before, competitors took to the challenging yet contestable connditions with a positive attitude.

The sets were consistent but the quality was not. Finding a wave that was easy to surf was a challenge, yet competitors pressed on at The Bend, Lyall Bay.

Congratulations to all those who placed first in their respective divisions. Points will be allocated shortly and placed on this website under the ‘points tally’ tab. Our next contest is on Saturday 11 December, and will be followed by a metal concert that night to celebrate.
